Installing and running-in speed skating bearings

BEARING INSTALLATION

Bearings have shields to protect them from dirt and water. They may have shields on one or both sides. They should be installed in the wheel with a shield facing outwards.

Use a skate tool to press each bearing into the wheel, making sure the skate tool will only contact the inner race of the bearing during installation. If the skate tool is incorrectly shaped, pressure on the shield could dent it and cause problems in the bearing.

RUN-IN

As bearings are manufactured in bulk often long before sale, the lubricant in new bearings is selected to prevent rust during long term storage. Often it is not the best for high performance, so we recommended running-in your bearings with a short skate before racing with them.
